Is South Africa safe for families?
This is one of the first questions many parents ask. Like any destination, South Africa benefits from thoughtful planning. Choosing the right regions, accommodation and transport makes a significant difference and helps families travel with confidence.
Can we go on safari with children?
Absolutely–but choosing the right safari is important. Some lodges have minimum age requirements, while others offer dedicated family programmes and child-friendly game drives. There are also excellent malaria-free safari destinations that are particularly popular with young families.
When is the best time to travel?
South Africa is a year-round destination. The best time depends on the regions you would like to visit and the type of holiday you're planning. School holidays, weather and wildlife seasons can all influence the ideal travel period.
Are the long flights manageable?
They are overnight and there is no jet lag at the other end, which is the single biggest thing in South Africa's favour for families.
Is a self-drive holiday a good idea?
South Africa has a well-developed road network and self-driving offers flexibility that's often especially valuable when travelling with children. The key is planning realistic driving distances and allowing plenty of time to enjoy each destination.
Can we self-cater?
Yes, and many families do for at least part of the trip. The supermarkets are excellent and a house with a braai is often the part children remember.
